It’s even more empowering for people living in poverty.

When people who live in wealthy, developed nations are asked to define poverty, they usually talk about things like a lack of food, clothing, or shelter, or a lack of access to clean water, medicine, or healthcare. We call this “external poverty.”

When people who are actually living in poverty talk about poverty, they talk about things like shame, helplessness and hopelessness. These are all internal. We call this “internal poverty.”

At Cultiva International we work with some of the most chronically malnourished and chronically impoverished people in the world who have suffered from both external and internal poverty. We’ve installed more than 2,000 garden boxes, working with indigenous Mayan families in the highlands of Guatemala. Guatemala is the most chronically malnourished country in the Western Hemisphere and 79 percent of Guatemalan children are chronically malnourished.

When a family receives their garden box, we’re able to address external poverty and address chronic malnutrition. We are also able to address internal poverty. By earning their own garden box, and working their own garden box, individuals see that they can make their life better. They have hope, and that changes everything.

Cultiva has teamed up with the Square Foot Gardening Foundation to get everyone growing food in their own garden.

With your sponsorship of a garden box, you will get free enrolment into the Square Foot Garden Introductory Course.
